The First Broadcast
At noon, February 5th, 1936, thousands of Guatemalans gathered around receivers that had been specially distributed to hear the voice of El Jefe. The speech was nothing special for one of Ubico's speeches, barring its status as the first televox broadcast. After seven minutes, Ubico congratulated the engineers for their feat in building the televox station and signed off. This was the first time most Guatemalans had heard Ubico's voice, and for some, this was a startling lurch to modernity.
Another thread unifying the nation.
